Josh had wanted to visit the newly-promoted Littleroot Gym for months. It had always been something that had stopped him. Between his injuries from Dewford and Vital City, he had been one busy man. With the turn of the new month, things had at last calmed down, giving him time to head to Littleroot.

The last time he was at the Gym, Josh had used it to bond with Aslan even while he was stuck in the hospital after his serious injuries post-Meteno. He and his Pokémon really were injury magnets, weren't they? With his new military role as a courier, he hoped this would make him less injury-prone.

This time, Josh would bring a different Pokémon. He was curious to see how much the challenge had changed. Sliding off the back of Janus the Espeon, the psychic-type mewed at the sight of Hideo Kino . "Morning, Hideo? Well, maybe afternoon by now," he greeted the fellow Gym Leader, glancing at his phone's clock. "Nope, still morning. Been meaning to get out here, but too many things have come up since I got out of the hospital. Looking forward to seeing what's changed since your promotion."

Welcome

Demand for the Ordeal Badge's nontraditional challenge was much greater than Hideo expected. A lot of people he challenged during the Vital City Tournament wanted to try it out - and the moment he opened up spots for them, they were filled.

Seems that people wanted to have fun dream adventures. Case in point: Josh Devlin , someone who'd already been through one of them, was here to try another.

Hideo was there to meet Josh, who arrived atop a sizeable Espeon. "Morning to you too," Hideo answered, saved from the time confusion thanks to the Beheeyem by his side. "As you can see, I got a full Gym now. Don't gotta do this in a treehouse my Oranguru built."

Now his Oranguru just used that place as a hangout. That she didn't let him enter.

Oh well.

"Anyways, I can show you to the less-rickety room we got available for the nontrad now, if you'll follow me."

He turned, his Beheeyem following suit. It wouldn't take long to walk through the library-like Gym, but the trip there wouldn't be a silent one. "So I like to ask all my non-traditional challengers this: why'd you choose A Monster In The Woods this time? It's certainly a bit more grim than the last story you did."

The facility was certainly impressive, but there was something warm and fuzzy about the old treehouse. Something that was representative of the passion Hideo had for his job. "There are days I still visit my old Gym grounds on Route 111, even after I moved my Secret Base out of there," Josh replied. "Nostalgia is a powerful force, isn't it?" he asked rhetorically, following the teenage psychic specialist.

The choice of story was very different, and Hideo warned the subject matter would be darker. "I mostly chose by title," Josh answered. "Thought it would be more thrill-of-the-hunt type, kind of like a Ranger trying to hunt a Notorious Pokémon." His thoughts briefly wandered to Yagyu, the Doublade that died to such a threat, before getting back on topic. "I'm also dealing with the loss of two of my Pyroar right now. Even if it's a dream, I don't want to mourn any more."

Hideo nodded along as Josh gave his reasoning. "Good enough reason as any. This story…certainly does involve a hunt. Won't spoil any of it for you, though. And I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your Pokemon; I can still recall the Pyroar you did the challenge with last time."

He could only hope that wasn't one of the casualties.

They'd soon reach the room, the Beheeyem by his side opening the door psychically for them. The room itself was considerably higher-end than the shack he'd used last time, with a nicer chair for Hideo to sit upon and a comfier couch for the challenger. A familiar pair of Musharna sat upon both seats, and a number of Psychic and Fairy Pokemon were scattered about, watching Hideo and Josh as they entered.

"This'll start the same as last time - just take a seat, and we'll begin." Hideo took his own seat, the Musharna that once occupied it floating to the side, remaining close to the boy. One of the Psychic Pokemon, a familiar Hatterene, gave the boy a book; there was little in terms of illustrations on the book, with the words "A Monster In The Woods" being the most striking feature - apart from the braille lettering one could run their fingers along.

Once Josh took a seat, the Musharna on the couch would move next to him. There'd be more than enough space for the Espeon as well, if it also wanted to sit on the couch. "All you need to do now is close your eyes, and give it a moment. Just focus on my words, and let them do their work."

His Pokemon went to work, the Musharnas letting out some Dream Mist as they would Hypnotize Josh into a peaceful slumber.

At The Edge

"For There's A Monster In The Woods."

The transition was instantaneous, Josh standing at the edge of a large forest - accompanied by a single person, who didn't seem eager to follow him.

Hideo's voice could be heard around him, spoken from above, yet clear, as if it were coming from his own head.

There was once a cozy town by the woods, where everyone knew each other's names. They weren't unfamiliar with hardships, but as of late, they had found themselves struck by a number of strange happenings: livestock thefts, strange sightings, odd noises in the night. Though they tried to manage the happenings on their own, the disappearance of a child - and the villagers gone missing trying to find them - proved to be too much.

And so they reached a conclusion: there must be something responsible for all these problems.

There's A Monster In The Woods

This tale follows an individual who was called in from outside the village, to investigate the disappearance. They had been called in by the town Mayor, who was eager for their assistance - for you see, this was no mere investigator.

This was an Inquisitor, someone who had the authority to investigate what they were called in for by any means, and the authority to render their judgment as they saw fit.

Something they were very-well capable of.

Josh Devlin may choose one Pokemon they possess. Josh Devlin will be able to function as if they were this Pokemon, and is instinctually aware of how to use all its attacks/abilities. They still are human in form, but they may choose to possess minor physical traits (fur, coloration, claws, etc.) appropriate to the chosen Pokemon.

"If you've any questions, Inquisitor," the Mayor said, "Ask them now. I dare not follow you into this accursed forest."

Hideo did warn Josh about how dark the tale was going to be. When he came to in the dream world, he seemed to be playing the role of a detective. An Inquisitor, as they seemed to be called. While the experience didn't completely relate, he was on the team that investigated a murder at Maple Manor. Perhaps that experience would let him get to the bottom of the mystery.

Josh rose up, dressed in white furs, with claws sharp as knives. He flinched as he instinctually clenched his fist, drawing blood from the palm of his left hand. In his right hand was a scimitar-like blade, shaped like the Disaster Pokémon's horn.

"Mayor, I do have questions," the Mauville Leader interjected. "Is there a particular time of day or night the attacks have been concentrated around?" Even after getting his answer, the questions would go on and on. He would ask if anyone had provided even a vague physical description, how the monster moved, and any potential links between the disappearance of the villagers and what they contributed to the village. Things that would narrow down their target before Josh would go off into the woods collecting evidence.

The First Contact

The Inquisitor asked their questions, just as their name suggested. And the Mayor would answer them.

"Most reports come from nighttime, but we've also had people say that it's acted in daylight. General mischief mainly, but it seems this monster never sleeps. Though I fear the reports can sometimes seem contradictory; there are many different reports on its size, its shape, or if it can even speak."

"Most disappearances have been…recent. The child's disappearance was first - the disappearances that followed have been from those who volunteered to look for him. Those that came back said they'd gotten lost in the forest, while others…their reports of the monster were no less confusing."

The information was, unfortunately, unhelpful. The Mayor wouldn't be able to offer anything more helpful than that.

"I wish good fortune upon your search, Inquisitor. May you find your way through this ordeal."

With that, the Mayor would depart, making his way back to the village, leaving the Inquisitor on their own. The forest before them wasn't an inviting sight, but it would be the one they'd be investigating. For

Before the Inquisitor could get far, there would be the sound of rustling bushes. It wasn't merely the sound of the wind - it would unmistakably be the noise of something moving through the brush, not far from where the Inquisitor entered.

It was moving towards the Inquisitor.

The source would soon reveal itself - a child. He seemed injured, a sling around one of his arms.

"You're the Inquisitor, aren't you?" the child said, a slight hesitation to his words. "You're looking for the Monster that's causing problems for everyone, right?"

"I know who the Monster is. He broke my arm."

Mischief, mm? At least it didn't seem malicious. Unfortunately, there were few qualities to go off... or at least consistent ones. The reports seemed to conflict with one another, speaking to the dangers of this beast despite the more... frivolous nature of the problems it was causing. "Thank you; every little bit helps," Josh answered, taking off into the woods. It seemed that his half-human, half-Absol form bestowed upon him part of the speed of one. If push came to shove, he could do some real damage with his newfound natural weapons, too.

Not far into the woods, Josh would come across a child that seemed hesitant to speak to him. He would entertain the young one with a mesmerizing SWORDS DANCE before addressing the child's concerns. Perhaps the white-furred Disaster Pokémon was not the greatest choice for such a tale; he expected to be fighting monsters in the woods. Maybe that would come later. He sadly had no way to physically comfort the boy using his Absol's skills.

"I am," Josh answered, kneeling down to approach the lad closely. "Anything you have about him can help. I'm Josh. It shouldn't be too far back to town. Let me help you get back there... or at least some place safe." Ever the valiant defender, perhaps he should have been putting the investigation first. His soft heart couldn't just leave the young boy there. If that monster came back, he would be a goner for sure!

An Accusation

The child watched as the Inquisitor displayed a wondrous Swords Dance. His eyes moved from illusory blade to illusory blade, trying to focus on a single one before losing track and moving to the other.

It did seem to assuage the child's anxiety a bit, though the boy shook his head at the Inquisitor's offer.

"I know the way back," he said. "I came here to help you. You're the one that's supposed to hunt down the Monster that's terrorizing everyone, and I know who the monster is. He ran off here after breaking my arm."

"It's the Psyker kid. The one everyone's looking for. He's the Monster!" The boy spoke loudly, certainty dripping from every word. "I told him I knew he was the Monster, and I tried to take him in. He broke my arm and ran off!"

The boy walked right up to the Inquisitor. "Nobody else believes me. You gotta find him! Make sure he can never hurt our village again!"

The whole thing sounded... strange and not right. If this boy was as injured as he said he was, why would he turn down a ride back to the village? It made little sense to him. The Master of Faster was conflicted; sure, Psyker would be a great lead to follow, but it would only be a lead. He would reluctantly play along for now. "If you're sure you're okay and can make it back yourself, I'm not stopping you. I'm just worried for your health is all."

It seemed there was little Josh could do to convince the child to return to the village, where it was safe. Was this whole ploy misdirection? He seemed too genuine for that. Even so, all he had was a name and no other leads. Not even a direction. "You know which way he ran or was headed? And why would he attack you like that? Did he steal anything from you?" For every answer, two follow-up questions. Once he had enough of a lead, only then could he pursue this Monster in the Woods.

An Accusation

The child shook his head. "You don't need to help me get back. This isn't deep enough for me to get lost. And my legs still work good."

The child shook his legs to emphasize his point.

"He attacked me because I told him I knew he was the Monster! I was gonna bring him in myself, but he used his Psyker powers to break my arm, and then he ran off into the woods. Bet he knew I was gonna tell everyone."

A look of frustration found its way onto the boy's face. "Even if my Dad didn't believe me, I know you will! You're an Inquisitor! You bring justice to those who deserve it!"

The boy's words bounded with passion; there wasn't an ounce of dishonesty to be wrung from them.

"He didn't take anything from me when he ran off…but I'm sure he must've been responsible for stuff going missing!"

So the monster was a Psychic-type Pokémon. It was a good thing Josh had chosen his Absol for the challenge; he would have a type advantage over it. He wondered if Twilight's shield against mental attacks would also apply to him. Perhaps he had other powers of his Absol, too. Maybe improved scent.

"Thank you so much. As long as you're confident you can make it back on your own, I won't try to stop you. I'm just worried about you is all. Two more questions: Do you know about how long ago you were attacked, and do you have anything that could have rubbed off from the monster? Anything I could potentially use to track the monster down?" A scent would have been ideal to get on the monster's trail, and a time frame would tell Josh how fresh the trail was. Even if he couldn't follow it, knowing how old any tracks were would be incredibly helpful. "Once you answer these two questions, you're free to go."

The boy nodded along as the Inquisitor asked their remaining questions.

"He ran off a week ago. That's when the attack happened. Everyone tried to look for him, but it hasn't gone so well. I think that's why they needed an Inquisitor to come in and help. If I had anything to help you find him, I'd give it, but I don't got anything."

Alas, the Inquisitor wouldn't have much help from this child.

"Please be careful, Inquisitor. And make sure he gets what's coming to him!"

With that, the child made his way back the way he came - away from the forest. The Inquisitor was once more on their own. The forest was hardly inviting - but they'd have to traverse further if they had any hope of finding their quarry.

An indeterminate amount of time would pass as the Inquisitor passed tree after tree, stump after stump, bush after bush. This forest seemed like it could go on forever, but they would persevere.

But in time, they'd notice a strange sensation. An odd thickness to the air, one that would make them feel slightly drowsy - and the unmistakable sensation that they were being watched.

Which would become far more obvious once the voice spoke to them.

"Once, it was rare for our humble forest to receive guests," it spoke, an odd calmness to their voice. It would be hard to tell where the voice was coming from, almost as if it surrounded them. "And now, so many have come to join us. Have you come to join us as well, Inquisitor?"

They would need to either need to find the source of this voice - or escape it. But neither would be easy.

As Josh continued deeper into the woods, he felt his eyelids growing heavy. Even his breaths were heavier than usual. All the telltale signs that a cloud of SPORE had been detonated nearby. The strange voice's source was difficult to discern, and became more and more difficult as time wore on. Though he couldn't see it, his eyes were turning red, as though he was sleep deprived. His time in the heavy air was limited, and he needed to get to the bottom of what was producing it. Soon.

"Show yourselves this instant!" Josh shouted, TAUNTING the voice's source to make themselves present. "We can go about this the easy way, or the hard way. You don't want to see the hard way. Trust me." After his bellowing, he took a deep breath and exhaled quite the yawn. This had better work, or he might not have the energy to escape easily. Where was his loyal steed when he needed it?

What's Up, Shroom?

The Inquisitor made their demand, Taunting the source of the voice to reveal itself.

And the answer they received began with a chuckle.

"Had I the capacity, I would meet you. But alas, I am bound to here; I may accept guests, but I cannot be one myself."

The scent of spores diminished - if only because they condensed into a visible trail. "Come then, dear guest. I await you at the end."

It wouldn't be a long path, nor one fraught with surprises. Not until the destination.

Rooted to the ground was a large, fungoid creature. It was far taller than the Inquisitor, and its cap could block the sun from their view. The closest thing to normalcy it possessed was its face, yet its features were decidedly unreal, like an attempt to emulate a face.

The area around it was hardly disturbed - it hadn't moved from this area in quite some time.

The only disturbance was a pair of townsfolk, who laid on the ground. They appeared to be alive, but coated in spores. Both were adults- neither could be the child they sought

"And now, we meet face to face, Inquisitor," the fungoid creature said, its playful tone unchanging. "Now that you have met me - what will you do?"
